Bulky Refuse Collections Guidance Notes

When considering organising a special collection for bulky items, please be aware that there are some items that cannot be collected and that the general guidance notes should be followed.

When listing items for collection, please bear in mind that one item is something that two men can carry. One part from a three-piece suite, a dining table, two dining chairs, a divan base and a mattress are all examples of one item.

Items which cannot be included in this service are:

  • Garden Waste
  • Gas Bottles
  • Outbuildings, including sheds and greenhouses
  • General builders waste
  • Soil or rubble
  • Concrete posts
  • Window frames/doors - internal and external
  • Fencing, gates and wire
  • Vehicles or vehicle parts
  • Xmas trees
  • Asbestos
  • Fluid containers, e.g. drums
  • Pianos and other similar heavy musical items
  • Fixtures and fittings, e.g. kitchen units, bathroom suites

For details of how to dispose of some items on this list, look at the Household Recycling Centre section.

General guidance notes:

  • If a carpet cannot be moved by people, cut it into pieces, roll it and tie it.
  • Underlay is an additional item.
  • A suite of furniture is not classed as one item.
  • Items should not be filled with other rubbish.
  • Items must be easily accessible from one point at the property.
  • Identical items have to be listed separately. If only one item is listed and identical ones are put out for collection then none of the items in concern will be taken.
  • Only the items on the list will be collected, additional requests must be made for additional items.

About this service

Focsa

Wiltshire Council's waste collection contractor, Focsa Services UK, can arrange to collect large domestic items and furniture (but not garden waste) from your home. The following charges, inclusive of VAT, currently apply, although 50% concessions are available to people claiming income related benefits - please tell us if this applies to you.

  • 1-4 Items is £18.38
  • 5-8 Items is £36.75
  • 9-12 Items is £52.50

To arrange a bulky waste collection, please contact us on 01225 776655. Payment must be received before the collection can take place. This can be done over the phone by credit or debit card. You will be given a collection date, and the items must be presented to the kerbside, ready for collection, from 7.15am on that day. Please advise us if you are unable to present your waste to the kerbside.

Group 5

Group 5 is a re-use charity. If you have unwanted household items or electrical goods that are in working order, then Group 5 can collect them free of charge. Group 5 is able to take a variety of items to help people set up home. They welcome crockery, cutlery, clean curtains, towels and bedding. Items will be screened and refurbished and re-distributed if in good condition; others can be stripped for spares. Group 5 will collect items from any part of the West Wiltshire area. To discuss whether the items you have can be re-used, and to arrange a collection, contact Group 5 on 01225 764849. The Group 5 offices are staffed by volunteers so if there is no answer when you call, then please leave a message and someone will call you back.

Furniture re-use

If Group 5 is unable to take the items that you would like to dispose of, then there are some furniture re-use websites that may be able to help. The websites allow you to advertise your usable or repairable bulky items, which are given away free of charge to others that can collect and give them a new home.

Below are a couple of links to some re-use websites.

Another option to consider is advertising in the free to collector/classifed sections of local press. Some local papers allow you to advertise for free.
