Under the Childcare Act 2006 local authorities took on a new duty from April 2008 to ensure, so far as is reasonably practicable, that the provision of childcare is sufficient to meet the requirements of parents in their area in order to enable them to work or undertake education or training leading to work. Councils are required to undertake a Childcare Sufficiency Assessment every 3 years to assess the supply of, and demand for, childcare in their area. Further detail on the guidance which sets out the framework for Childcare Sufficiency Assessments can be obtained from the Department for Education website.
Wiltshire published its first Childcare Sufficiency Assessment Report in April 2008. The second report has now been produced along with an executive summary and an action plan for addressing the childcare gaps. Local plans have also been developed to focus work on filling local gaps identified in the assessment report.
