Ethnic minority achievement service (EMAS)

About this service

The Wiltshire Ethnic Minority Achievement Service (EMAS) is a team within Schools Branch.

It consists of:

  • a Head of Service;
  • a Consultant for Race Equality and Diversity and a project leader for Black pupil achievement;
  • an English as an Additional Language (EAL) team consisting of a team leader, five EAL advisory teachers and one EAL support teacher;
  • ten bilingual assistants

EMAS aims to improve the capacity of schools to raise the attainment and achievement of pupils from minority ethnic groups through:

  • advice and support for senior leaders in schools with school self evaluation in relation to race equality and cultural diversity and provision for minority ethnic pupils and students;
  • advice and training for teachers, teaching assistants and support staff on strategies to support the development of English as an additional language (EAL), including demonstration of strategies within schools;
  • advice and training on ways of making the curriculum more accessible to, and relevant for, minority ethnic children and young people;
  • advice and training for staff and governors on race equality and cultural diversity;
  • support for schools with the language assessment of pupils and students learning EAL;
  • support for schools with procedures for tracking and monitoring the attainment of minority ethnic pupils and students;
  • bilingual support for targeted pupils and students who are new to English;
  • support for schools with home-school liaison.
