About this service
There are some 2,500 adults and 300 children transported during a week across the county and beyond, on behalf of the Department for Community Services and the Department for Children and Education (DCE) respectively. The entitlement to transport is determined by these two departments, with the responsibility for arranging transport and the letting of contracts with local transport providers remaining with the Passenger Transport Unit.
We have a dedicated team delivering this service on your behalf, which are responsible for procuring transport contracts with local providers such as taxi and private hire companies, Community Transport Groups, Bus Companies and Voluntary Drivers. We have contracts in place with these providers, which are regularly monitored to ensure an effective and economic service is delivered.
All the organisations and drivers that are used to provide transport services must be licensed with the appropriate body, prior to being accepted on our approved list. All drivers must be checked by the Criminal Records Bureau, before being eligible to drive.
Supporting the transport providers on transport there is often a Passenger Assistant who assists with the journey, ensuring that the pupil is transported in a comfortable and safe manner.
