Shortcuts for walk around the world

Walk Around The World (WATW) is an inter-class challenge, aimed at promoting all forms of sustainable transport and reducing levels of car usage. Every Wednesday, Schools will promote sustainable transport and try to encourage as many children as possible to walk / scoot, cycle or bus to school.

WATW is run throughout the school year and each class collects points based on the mode of travel of each pupil; the more sustainable the mode, the more points you earn. Each point is worth 1 km and the aim is to beat the other classes on the 4,000km journey around the UK.

Each school taking part will have received a pack which includes the following:

  • Class Instructions: these need to be given out to every class teacher. One side will have some basic instructions and on the reverse will be a termly record sheet for the teachers to record how the children came to school.
  • Administrator Instructions: these need to be given to the admin staff. At the end of each term, the TravelWise team will e-mail the school requesting some basic information from them – this should only take about 10 minutes.
  • Walk Around The World Wallchart: This is a large poster that needs to be displayed in a prominent area, such as the school reception. On the map, each class can chart their journey.
  • Stickers: These are to be used, at the end of each term, for classes to mark on the map their total distance travelled – this will make it easier to see which class has travelled the furthest distance!

This inter-class challenge has been designed not only to reduce levels of car usage on the school journey, but to aid the implementation of School Travel Plans. Stickers and certificates will be sent out to participating schools – these are for each term’s winning class in your school.

Class termly record sheets and data input sheets (for return to the School Travel Plan Team) are sent out through the Wisenet system toward the end of each term. In addition, the class sheets can be downloaded from the links on the right.
