Consultation on the Review of Special Educational Needs (SEN) Provision – update and report
What’s it all about?
Over recent months Wiltshire Council officers have been working with schools, parent representatives and other people to review SEN provision in the county. This review led to the development of some proposals for changes to SEN provision. Since March, the council have been consulting with a wide range of people about these proposals for the future. That stage of the consultation is now complete.
The aims of the review are to improve the SEN system in Wiltshire. The system will be clearer for parents/carers and school staff. This review is not an exercise to reduce funding but to make the best use of the resources currently available for Special Educational Needs.

What has happened to the responses?
Many people responded to the consultation, including parents/carers, school staff and children/young people. These responses are highly valued and the council would like to thank everyone who took the time to read and respond to the consultation document.
A report has now been written, which summarises the results of the consultation. This report has been shared with the councillors who will make decisions in relation to the proposals. The proposals were discussed at the Cabinet meeting on 27 July. You can find out more about this meeting and view the consultation report here.
The report was based upon detailed analysis of the responses to each of 15 questions on the questionnaire, and of all comments, letters and emails received in relation to the proposals. These results are summarised in an appendix to the above report. You can view these results here
To enable them to make an informed decision, councillors have also had access to a copy of every letter, email and comment received in relation to the proposals, and to the additional information provided below:

How and when will parents/carers be able to discuss any changes that may affect their child?
Schools and the Local Authority will be working together with the parents/carers of any child for whom different provision may be made after September 2011. Information about the way this is being done will be sent to parents/carers in September 2010. Schools have information about how the agreed proposals may lead to changes to how some pupil’s special educational needs are met. Parents/carers should contact the special educational needs co-ordinator at their child’s school if they have any immediate concerns.
