About this service
What do we offer?
The Early Years Inclusion team is part of the Department for Children and Education.
Our service:
- promotes the early identification of children aged 0-5 years with disabilities and difficulties in order to improve outcomes
- ensures that effective early intervention and support for children and their families is provided in a timely manner
- co-ordinates these services for children and their families, working together with other agencies, through Inclusion Support Meetings (ISMs). To find out more about ISMs,see the SEN Early Years leaflet.
Who does the Early Years Inclusion team work with?
Our service works in partnership with:
- parents and carers, early years settings, schools, the portage service, children’s centres and district specialist centres
- colleagues from health, social care, education and voluntary agencies
- childminders, holiday clubs, out of school clubs
in order to ensure positive outcomes for children.
Who is in the team and what do we do?
Early Years Inclusion Officers
- provide advice and support to early years settings to promote inclusion of children 0-5 years with difficulties and disabilities
- work closely with SENCOs to ensure early identification and intervention for children and their families, responsible for the co-ordination and implementation of Local Inclusion Support Meetings (LISMs). See more information about LISMs.
- provide a rolling programme of training for early years SENCOs
- work in partnership with parents using the Common Assessment Framework (CAF)
- provide Personal Social and Emotional Development (PSED) - a programme of support for children aged 0-5 years with behaviour, emotional and social difficulties
- may support a child and family within their home, early years setting and school
- provide parenting advice through a range of programmes
- support a child’s needs on transition into school, through Transition Inclusion Support Meetings (TISMs) – for more information see SEN early years leaflet.
Early Support Development Workers
- provide advice and support through the early support programme for families with babies /children under 5 with additional needs, disabilities and difficulties
- provide key worker support enabling families to access help and benefits
- help families access better co-ordinated services for their children, particularly when several agencies are involved
- deliver training to parents and professionals using the early support materials
