There are some 1,000 pupils transported to schools across Wiltshire who have a statement of special need. Transport can take the form of a car to specialised minibuses to cater for wheelchair users. The entitlement to transport is determined by the Assessment & Placement Team, with the responsibility for arranging transport and the letting of contracts with local transport providers lying with the Passenger Transport Unit.
We have a dedicated team delivering this service on your behalf, which are responsible for procuring transport contracts with local providers such as taxi and private hire companies, Community transport groups, bus companies and Voluntary drivers. We have contracts in place with these providers, which are regularly monitored to ensure an effective and economic service is delivered.
All the organisations and drivers that are used to provide transport services must be licensed with the appropriate body, prior to being accepted on our approved list. All drivers must be checked by the Criminal Records Bureau, before being eligible to drive.
Supporting the transport providers on transport there is often a Passenger assistant who assists with the journey, ensuring that the pupil is transported in a comfortable and safe manner.
