The Wiltshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR)

The Wiltshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) contains information on all known archaeological sites in the County. Data is collected from museums, aerial photographs and early maps, and also from published reports on archaeology.

The SMR consists of a computer-based mapping system and an Access database, holding details of some 19 000 sites and finds. The system is used to supply information to a range of people including planners and developers, land managers and farmers and students and memebers of the public wanting to do research.

Most people visiting the SMR have a specificsite or area which they want to research, perhaps their village, town or parish.
