The Wiltshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) contains information on all the known archaeological sites in the County. Data is collected from museums, aerial photographs and early maps, and also from published reports on archaeology.

The SMRconsists of a computer-based mapping system and database, holding details of some 19 000 sites and finds. The system is used to supply information to a range of people including planners and developers, landscape managers and farmers and students and members of the public wanting to do research.

Most people visiting the SMR usually have a specific site or area which they want to find out more about, perhaps their village, town or parish.

They can select from a range of resources to research their chosen subject:

  • A collection of some 15 000 aerial photographs
  • The SMR database printouts of nearly 19 000 sites and finds
  • A colection of nearly 200 SMR maps showing plotted detail of all known sitess
  • A library of archaeological excavation and survey reports.

The Wiltshire SMR is in Bythesea Rd in Trowbridge and can be contacted on 01225 713736

Sites like the deserted medieval village of Eastrop can be seen on aerial photos.
The earthworks at Eastrop were plotted from the aerial evidence.
