Strengthening of Staverton Railway Bridge
Progress Report: Week 1 ending 12th March 2007
Weather
First half of the week wet, second half dry.
Meetings & Site Instructions
Frequent site meetings have been held to monitor progress.
Two site instructions have been issued:-
1. To provide additional signage for the pub reading "Pedestrian
access available to the Old Bear Pub"
2. To provide 10m of Heras fencing across the driveway of
the "Kings Arms" public house.
Summary of progress
- The site has been established.
- The pedestrian and vehicular diversions have been implemented.
- All known services have been exposed clearly and the routes traced.
- All previously unknown services have been traced, exposed and identified.
- The timber screens have been erected on the bridge parapets.
- The safety fencing has been erected on the trackside.
Planned
works for week ahead
- Excavation for phase one of the works, consisting of a 1.9m wide trench
across the centre of the arch will take place.
Other
programming items or issues
- Due to locating an unexpected utility service the works were suspended for
Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th March pending approvals
of the revised method of working by Network Rail.
- The first concrete pour is anticipated to take place late Friday/Saturday.

Progress Report: for Week 2 ending 18th March 2007
Weather
Mainly dry and bright for the week.

Frequent site meetings to monitor progress.
Site instruction Number three issued
1. Amendment to back of wall drainage and adjustment to concrete backfill
design to suit arch profile
Summary of progress
- Revised method statement approved by Network Rail
- Majority of phase one of the works completed, consisting of a 1.9m wide trench excavated
across the centre of the arch. The excavation was filled with concrete on Saturday morning (17th
March).
Planned works for week ahead
- Waterproofing, drainage and backfilling for phase one of the works to be
completed.
- Excavation for phase two of the works, consisting of a trench excavated between the phase
one trench and the “Trowbridge” side parapet.
- Concrete pour is anticipated for late Friday.

programming items or issues
- The contractor is due to issue a revised programme of works in the near
future. This will indicate an anticipated completion date which will be circulated.
Progress Report: for Week 3 ending 26th March 2007
Weather
Cold, mainly dry and bright for the week.
Meetings & Site Instructions
Frequent site meetings were held to monitor progress.
Site instruction: The contractor was asked to amend a sign on
the diversion route.
Summary of progress
- The excavation for phase two of the works has taken place.
- The concreting for phase two of the works took place early Saturday morning.
- The excavation has taken place for the buried/substructure drainage.

works for week ahead
- The waterproofing, drainage and backfilling for phase two of the works will
take place.
- The headwalls to the West for the buried/substructure drainage will be constructed.
- The carriageway surfacing will be laid.

Progress Report: for Week 4 ending 1st April 2007
Weather
Dry and bright.
Meetings & Site Instructions
Frequent site meetings to monitor progress.
No site instructions issued.
Summary of progress
- The waterproofing, drainage and backfilling for phase two of the works was
completed.
- The headwalls for the west drainage were constructed.
- The west embankments were locally re-profiled.
- The kerbing was undertaken to the west of the structure.
- The water main was repositioned within the structure.
- The hardened verge was constructed.

- The carriageway will be re-surfaced.
- The temporary fencing will be erected.
- The site will be tidied and made good.

programming items or issues
- The road will be fully re-opened on Wednesday 4th
April; a further closure is programmed to commence in early May for 3 weeks, this will allow the gas
main diversion to be undertaken and complete the final phase of the works.
- Balfour Beatty (main contractor) together with Prima Services (provider of rail safety
staff) ran an Easter Egg competition with the children of the local Primary School. The children were
asked to draw a picture showing the work taking place and describe why they should not play on construction
sites. Prizes of Easter Eggs were handed to the winners on Thursday by Site Engineer Andrew Richardson.

Progress Report: for Week ending 29th April 2007
Weather
First half of the week, dry with some showers, second half dry and fine.
Meetings & Site Instructions
Frequent site meetings were held and two site instructions were issued:
- SI 11: a request to amend the temporary signs.
- SI 12: an instruction to ensure that the temporary traffic signals were manually operated
at peak times.
Summary of progress
- The site has been re-established.
- The traffic management has been re-established.
- The water main in the west verge has been tested by Wessex Water.
- The hoarding to the parapets has been erected.
- The excavation for the gas main has been completed.
- The gas main was diverted on the 27th April 2007.
- The road was re-opened under traffic lights on the afternoon of the 28th
April 2007.
- The footway and carriageway excavations have commenced.
Planned
works for week ahead
- The excavation will commence; (please note due to the area containing several
services it will be necessary for this to be hand dug in order to protect them).
Other
programming items or issues
As stated in previous consultations, work will continue
until the 24th May. The highway will remain open with temporary signals at
the bridge, except for the following dates when a road closure will be in place 9th
May, 11th May and the 22nd
– 24th May 2007.

Progress Report: for Week 6 ending 4th May 2007
Weather
Generally dry and fine
Meetings & Site Instructions
Frequent site meetings to monitor progress.
Summary of progress
- The highway re-opened under temporary traffic signals on Saturday 28th
April 2007.
- The eastern footway excavations have been completed.
- The permanent diversion of the Wales & West Utilities Gas main has been completed.
- The re-testing and chlorination of the Wessex Water main in the western verge was undertaken.
- The initial concrete pours for the in-situ concrete backfill to the masonry arch bridge
have been completed.
Planned works for week
ahead
- The in-situ concrete backfill to the masonry arch bridge will be completed.
- The installation of the steel palisade fencing to the railway boundary along the west
of the site will commence.
- The waterproofing and drainage works to the in-situ concrete backfill will begin.
- Backfilling with type 6N granular material behind the strengthened arch will be completed.
Other
programming items or issues
- Good progress has been made with the excavation works and construction is
currently running slightly ahead of the revised programme.
- As previously indicated, it is anticipated that work will continue until the 24th
May. The highway will remain open with temporary signals at the bridge, except for the following dates
when a road closure will be in place 9th
May, 11th May

– 24th May.
Progress Report: for Week 7ending 14th May 2007
Weather
Generally dry, wet weather during Friday and the weekend.
Meetings & Site Instructions
Frequent site meetings were held to monitor progress.
Summary of progress
- The final pour for the in-situ concrete backfill over the masonry arch bridge
has taken place.
- The installation of the steel palisade fencing to the railway boundary along the west
and east sides of the site has commenced.
- The waterproofing and drainage works to the in-situ concrete backfill were completed.
- The construction of the headwalls to the east of the site commenced.
Planned
works for week ahead
- To complete the installation of the steel palisade fencing to the railway
boundary along the west and east sides of the site.
- To commence the construction of the headwalls to the east of the site.
- To lay the kerbs.
- To deposit the fill into the eastern footway.
- To re-connection the Wessex Water main in the eastern footway.
- To remove the temporary concrete barrier.
- To complete the re-surfacing works.
- To reinstate the highway road markings over the structure.
Other
programming items or issues
- The excavation works took less time than anticipated so the construction
is currently running ahead of the revised programme. This has allowed for the planned completion date
of the works to be moved forward by 3 days.
- The highway will remain open under traffic lights until early Saturday morning when the
road will re-close for 3 days to allow for the removal of the concrete barrier, the resurfacing works
and the reinstatement of the road markings. This closure is now scheduled to take place from Saturday
the 19th to Monday
the 21st May.
- The road will be re-opened to traffic on the 21st May. (Exact
time unknown – depending on progress of the work).
