Welcome to Travelwise. We are based in the Environmental Services Department at Wiltshire County Council in Trowbridge and our main aim is to promote a more sensible means of travelling.
Travelwise is not 'anti-car', but we do encourage and promote less car use for trips - typically those short journeys under two miles.
When using a car is essential, car sharing can be the perfect solution and/or using more fuel efficient vehicles to make your journey. By essential, we mean that there is no other way of travelling - not just because using a car is more convenient and saves time! For more information on fuel efficient vehicles, check out the Energy Saving Trust now!

Travelwise wants more people to walk, cycle, use public transport, or even avoid the need to travel altogether by combining seperate trips into one - this could be achieved by working from home, or even ordering goods and services over the phone or the internet.

We should all have at least 30 minutes of brisk exercise every day. Giving up your car for those little trips is the easy, sensible and cheap way of getting you fit whilst keeping the air cleaner and helping Wiltshire's economy work by reducing congestion. So you can even avoid paying for the gym if you start changing yours and your family's daily routine by making sensible travel choices like walking and cycling.

Individuals, schools, colleges, businesses and other orgainisations can become more travel aware through Travel Plans which are being developed throughout Wiltshire and the UK and are reducing car use and giving more people the freedom and independance to find better ways to live.
As one of the largest employers in Wiltshire, the County Council, we are implementing our own Corporate Travel Plan (pdf 613Kb)
, consulting and involving staff in the process. Developed in 2004, we have focused on our main campus County Hall where almost 1000 people work. However, with the Vision for Trowbridge destined to see large parts of the campus redeveloped and reorganisation of staff, we are expecting staff to increase by 20% and car parking spaces to fall by nearly 50%! It would have been even more were we not building more car parking to compensate.Independent consultants are currently updating the Plan.
Our Calendar of Events (pdf 224Kb)
shows you approximately what events are happening that you can become involved in - check the contacts provided for more information.
