Summary of Service

The Youth Development Service designs and delivers with young people, programmes of informal educational activity that provide opportunities for them to:

  • develop their physical, intellectual, moral, spiritual, social and emotional capabilities;
  • identify and accept their responsibilities as individuals, group members and citizens;
  • understand and act upon the personal and social issues which affect their lives.

Details of Service

The Service provides personal and social development learning opportunities through quality youth work. Its activities are:

  • To provide Centres and Teams of youth workers as the hub of youth work delivery across Wiltshire; aware of and responsive to, local need.
  • To develop Youth Issues Groups which identify needs and contribute to the identification of responses and practices.
  • To use a range of youth work methods and settings, accessible to all young people aged 13-19 years and target those who are at risk of exclusion.
  • To engage young people, voluntarily in the youth work curriculum, enabling learning which is relevant to their needs.
  • To contribute towards young people's safety, physical health and emotional well-being through service delivery, sign-posting and referral to specialist services.
  • To provide advice and information services.
  • To provide counselling services for young people.
  • To provide opportunities to celebrate and accredit young people's learning and achievements.
  • To engage young people in democratic processes, enabling them to have 'voice and influence' about the services which affect them.
  • To provide advice and support in the development of youth councils.
  • To advocate on behalf of young people and present positive images of young people.

Eligibility

There are limited places on the course, which is open to the public. Wiltshire Youth Development Service (WYDS) has applied a set of 'internal' criteria that you will need to fulfil before applying. This ensures that you have adequate supervisory support from the youth service (practice supervisor) and an adequate work placement experience, before you start your course.

As a staff member of WYDS your fees for the course will be met by the Service. Applicants meeting the defined criteria can apply for a place on the course. The course director will allocate places in consultation with the tutor team. The criteria you must meet are as follows:

Essential

  • To be criminal records bureau cleared (CRB cleared)
  • To have completed the WYDS induction
  • To be involved in at least one session of youth work per week (paid/unpaid)
  • To be at least 18 years old
  • To have a practice learning supervisor who is recognised by the WYDS

Desirable

  • To have been engaged in youth work with WYDS (paid/unpaid) for at least 1 year
