Brown tourism signs

The Wiltshire Brown Tourism Signs policy was previously administered by Visit Wiltshire. The council is now taking over this function and we are currently drafting our new policy, application and guidance process. Until this is finalised, you are unable to submit an application.

We aim to accept applications from January 2025. Please return to this page for updates.

In the meantime, for enquiries or requests for further information, email Brownsigns@wiltshire.gov.uk

What are brown tourism signs

Brown tourism signs are part of the broader system of road signage regulated by the Department for Transport (DfT), and are designed to provide clear, consistent directions to tourist sites across England.

The brown signs feature white text and symbols on a brown background and are used on main roads and highways to direct visitors to tourism destinations.

Local authorities, like Wiltshire Council, are responsible for managing the installation and maintenance of these signs. The applicant will pay an initial fee and, once approved, costs to implement the signage. The process takes roughly four to six months.
