Hazardous waste

On this page we tell you what hazardous waste is, and how to dispose of it.

We are only able to dispose of certain hazardous waste that comes from households. If you collect waste as part of a business or a fee is charged, this becomes business waste. See the Business waste page for more details.

What is hazardous waste

Waste is hazardous if it is harmful to people, or the environment. This includes:

  • asbestos
  • chemicals, such as brake fluid
  • print toner
  • batteries

If you are producing hazardous waste, you are responsible for it. Some types of hazardous waste can be taken to our Household Recycling Centre (HRCs). If you cannot take your waste to a Household Recycling Centre you may be able to arrange for a specialist to collect it.

If you are a Wiltshire resident, you should only use the HRCs that are within the Wiltshire Council local authority area. If you pay your council tax to Swindon Borough Council, see Swindon Borough Council: Bins, rubbish and recycling.
