Calne High Street
Work has begun to re-open Calne High Street to vehicular traffic as part of an 18 month trial under an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (ETRO). The route will allow vehicles to travel southbound from Wood Street to Curzon Street. It will be restricted (via an ETRO) through a three tonne weight limit, a 20mph speed limit, and the junction between High Street and Curzon Street will prohibit right turns onto the A4.
The work began on 13 January 2025 and is expected to last around four weeks. To enable the scheme to progress, we have suspended the existing disabled parking bays at the northern end of the High Street, with alternative parking approximately 50 metres away on Wood Street.
Advance notification of the scheme involved detailed discussions with the Town Council, Wiltshire Councillors, and a number of press releases which were picked up by the local news. All businesses can submit comments through the formal process.
As the scheme is a trial, there will be an opportunity for you to comment on the proposals. The comments will be collated and presented to the Cabinet Member for consideration at a later date.
Background to the scheme
Local authorities have a duty to review and assess air quality under the Local Air Quality Management Regime introduced by the Environment Act 1995 (EA95). The Environment Act 2021 (EA21) has further strengthened the requirements of the EA95 and introduced more rigorous requirements for achieving improved air quality.
The draft Air Quality Action Plan (AQAP) for Wiltshire 2024 to 2029 was prepared following the expiration of the previous plan and was approved by Cabinet on 19 March 2024. It was identified within the AQAP that the rerouting of traffic through the previously pedestrianised High Street within Calne.
