Bikeability training for children and young people

We offer Bikeability training through Wiltshire schools, mainly in Year 6 and above. Please ask at your child's school for more information.

Pass Plus

Pass Plus is a national training scheme aimed at improving the skills of newly qualified drivers and helping them drive more safely. The course be taken at any time although it should be most useful to new drivers in the year after passing their test. You can find out more about the scheme at GOV.UK Pass Plus (opens new window).

Pass Plus is made up of 6 practical modules:

• town driving
• all-weather driving
• driving out of town
• night driving
• driving on dual carriageways
• driving on motorways

We offer a discount of £70 on the cost of Pass Plus to drivers aged 17-25 years who live, work or study in Wiltshire. If you live elsewhere, your local council may offer a similar discount scheme - check their website for details.

Drive Plus

Drive Plus is a Wiltshire scheme for experienced drivers who hold full UK licences.

Are you wanting to:

• return to driving after a significant break, such as illness, injury or living abroad?
• return to driving after a collision or other incident?
• re-gain your confidence and enjoyment of driving?
• achieve up-to-date, safe, systematic, fuel efficient driving?
• recognise whether and how your driving is changing as you get older?
• identify and address any bad driving habits you may have acquired over the years?
• reassure family or friends, if they are concerned about your driving?
• gain professional support to help make the decision to continue, or to retire from driving.

A Drive Plus practical assessment with one of our friendly local assessors could help to improve your confidence and help you to stay driving safely for longer. Assessments take place in your own car on local roads, and generally last 1-1½  hours with a debrief session and the chance to ask questions. The assessment costs £50 and payment for the Drive Plus assessment can be made using our online payment system: Civica: Online payments portal (opens new window) (Wiltshire Council Drive Plus assessment payment).

Drive Plus workshops give you the chance to explore key driving topics in more depth in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, whether in person or online. 

The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA)

The Wiltshire Group of the RoSPA Advanced Drivers and Riders (Wiltshire RoADAR) are a voluntary not for profit group who coach and mentor drivers and motorcyclists. They can help you to improve your road safety, enjoy your driving and riding more and save money on running costs, with free tuition and the chance to achieve a nationally recognised qualification. Wiltshire and Bath Advanced Motorcyclists

Wilts and Bath Advanced Motorcyclists offer guidance and mentoring on behalf of IAM RoadSmart. They offer free taster sessions to demonstrate how advanced riding techniques and skills could improve your confidence, ability and enjoyment of riding. Biker Down

Biker Down Wiltshire provides free training for motorcyclists of all ages and all types of bike to enable people to support and help injured bikers until the emergency services arrive. Training in scene management, First Aid and the science of being seen is delivered by members of the Fire and Rescue and Ambulance services. BikeSafe

BikeSafe is a national police-run motorcycle initiative, aimed at working with motorcycle riders in a relaxed environment to raise awareness of the importance and value of progressing on to accredited post-test training. BikeSafe workshops involve an observed ride with a police graded motorcyclist or approved BikeSafe observer. For further information, visit Bike Safe (Wiltshire) (opens new window).

We have updated our Practice Note - CSW, SID and ANPR Deployment Apr 2023 (OpenDocument text format, 102 KB)(opens new window) on Community Speed Watch (CSW), temporary speed indicator devices (SIDs) and the use of automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) cameras to target speeding.

• CSW gives local people the power to help reduce traffic speeds in their communities. Volunteers are provided with special equipment and training by Wiltshire Police to enable them to record the speed of passing vehicles. Motorists caught speeding are sent a Police warning letter, and persistent offenders may face further action.
• SIDs are used to raise drivers' awareness  of their speed. They are activated by an approaching vehicle and will display the vehicle's speed and either a reminder message to slow down or a 'thank you' for keeping within the speed limit.
• Civilian-deployed ANPR cameras can be used to record passing vehicles, their speed and registration details. This data can then be reported to the Police and used to aid intelligence about speeding hotspots for further action.

The new advice explains the criteria for Parish Councils and communities to apply for these measures to improve road safety in their local area.
