Home composting
Overview
Composting is a great way to recycle the organic waste you produce at home.
Composting is nature's way of recycling. Millions of tiny bugs break down the things we put into our compost bins and turn it into compost. It can then be used in your garden to improve the condition of your soil.
On the following pages you can find out How to make your own compost, What waste you can compost at home, and find information on Subsidised food waste composters.
How to make your own compost
Making your own compost at home is an easy and eco-friendly process which can help to reduce the amount of waste sent to landfill.
You can make your own compost at home by:
- buying a compost bin from most garden centres, DIY stores or Household Recycling Centres (HRCs)
- building your own compost heap. For directions on how to do this, see Garden Organic: Homemade compost bins (opens new window)
- purchasing Subsidised food waste composters which can compost all cooked and uncooked food waste and garden waste
Compost produced from garden waste and HRC collections can be purchased in small bags from Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) or in larger volumes by visiting Hills Waste Solutions (opens new window).
What waste you can compost at home
To make successful compost you need a good balance of green and brown garden waste.

- dried grass, weeds and leaves
- straw, hay and sawdust
- cardboard such as egg boxes and tubes
Subsidised food waste composters
If you wish to compost your food waste you can purchase a food waste composter.
We have teamed up with Great Green Systems (opens new window) to offer Wiltshire residents subsidised food waste composters, called a Green Johanna (opens new window).
Food waste composters are similar to traditional compost bins but they are able to take all cooked and uncooked food waste. This includes meat, fish, bones, dairy products, vegetables and fruit.
Special subsidised offer: you can buy a food waste composter for only £68 (instead of £144.99).
The Green Johanna (opens new window) food waste composter is a hot composter which breaks down all food waste quickly. It is designed to be used in shady areas of your garden. It is also suitable for your garden waste.
