What waste you can compost at home

To make successful compost you need a good balance of green and brown garden waste.

Green garden waste you can compost:

  • grass cuttings, weeds and hedge clippings
  • flowers and plant cuttings
  • fruit and vegetable scraps

You can still take your garden waste to any of our Household Recycling Centres (HRCs) free of charge.

Brown garden waste you can compost:

  • tea bags, coffee grounds and filters
  • egg shells
  • dried grass, weeds and leaves
  • straw, hay and sawdust
  • cardboard such as egg boxes and tubes
