Fly-tipping witness reward scheme

Report fly-tipping and you could earn up to £200 if we secure a penalty or prosecution.

Witness reward scheme information

Key details about the witness reward scheme:

  • if you have witnessed fly tipping or have come cross one, report it online
  • we will review and decide a course of formal action, which may include witnesses providing a statement and attending court; this is not normally the case if a Fixed Penalty Notice is paid as no court action is required
  • if a successful formal outcome is achieved, we will let you know and within 14 days your vouchers will be posted to you
  • rewards are not considered if evidence is taken from the scene or just by a witness having physical evidence (an offence must be witnessed)
  • rewards will not be paid if we decide to not continue with the investigation
  • we have the right to cancel the reward scheme at any time without notifying witnesses of open cases
  • information supplied is treated in strictest confidence in accordance with the data protection legislation
  • vouchers are subject to full terms and conditions
  • vouchers cannot be exchanged for money or other services
  • vouchers will be sent out once the Enforcement Manager has received confirmation of the Fixed Penalty Notice being paid or a successful conviction

Witness rewards

The reward vouchers will be paid as follows:

  • £100 after a successful Fixed Penalty Notice when the fine is paid in full by the offender
  • £100 after the case goes to court, but the witness is not required to attend
  • £200 after the case goes to court and the witness is required to attend

Investigation process

There are four steps to a fly-tipping investigation:

  1. Report: we receive a fly-tipping report.
  2. Investigate: our environmental enforcement team investigates the report to gather evidence.
  3. Clearance: our environmental enforcement team arranges clearance on land it is responsible for.
  4. Review evidence: we review the evidence, including physical items or witness statements, and take action where possible - this can include issuing a Fixed Penalty Notice or pursuing prosecution.
