Information for electors voting in the General Election 2024.

A UK parliamentary election has been called for Thursday 4 July 2024.

Poll cards and postal poll cards are being sent out, telling electors how and where they can vote.

The deadline to register to vote at this election is midnight on 18 June 2024. Please apply early.

Postal votes

The deadline to apply for a postal vote at this election is 5pm on 19 June 2024. Please apply early. 

Apply online at GOV.UK: apply to vote by post (opens new window). Please apply early to ensure that your ballot papers are sent out as soon as possible.

If you are away on polling day you can apply to vote by post. This means that we will send your ballot papers out to your home or an away address if you will not be home at the time of the election.

If you have a postal vote in place or want to apply for a postal vote and you are worried you may not receive your postal vote in time based on the mailing dates above, you may wish to apply to vote by proxy.

Remember that if you appoint a proxy who would need to travel to your polling station and would need a postal vote that your proxy must apply for their postal proxy vote before 5pm on 19 June. 

Vote by proxy

The deadline to apply for a proxy vote at this election is 5pm on 26 June 2024.

You can ask a trusted person to cast your vote on your behalf. This person will be nominated as your proxy and can cast your vote at your usual polling station. If your proxy lives away from your polling station, they can apply for a postal proxy vote up until the postal vote deadline of 5pm on Wednesday 19 June. 

If you apply to vote by proxy after 5pm on Wednesday 19 June you must appoint a proxy that can cast your vote at your usual polling station. 

Voter ID

The deadline to apply for a Voter Authority Certificate at this election is 5pm on 26 June 2024. Please apply early. 

Everyone voting at a polling station will need to show an accepted form of photo ID to vote.

Accepted forms of photo ID include passports, photographic driving licences, biometric immigration documents, and certain concessionary travel passes. A full list can be found at The Electoral Commission: Accepted forms of photo ID (opens new window).

If you do not already have an accepted form of photo ID you can apply for a free Voter Authority Certificate GOV.UK: Apply for photo ID to vote (called a ‘Voter Authority Certificate’) (opens new window)

The Voter Authority Certificate can be used at all elections and people are advised to apply as early as possible.
