Health suites - update: 19 June 2024
We wanted to update you on our plans for the sauna, steam room and spa facilities (collectively known as health suites) which are located at Bradford-on-Avon, Chippenham, Corsham, Devizes, Durrington, Marlborough and Salisbury. Read the Health suite facilities - full statement below.
Update on health suite facilities at our leisure centres
As you may remember, in 2023 we decided to temporarily close the health suite facilities indefinitely. The cost to run these facilities was around £80k per year and in the nine months prior to closure the open sites generated income of around £10k. Given the impact on our carbon footprint, and the cost it took to run them - impacted by soaring energy costs - the decision was made to close them, take stock and plan the best way forward.
Having taken the time to thoroughly analyse the data available to us, including usage, the cost to not only maintain the facilities but to get them back up and running, we have made a number of decisions.
The health suite facility at Five Rivers Health and Wellbeing Centre in Salisbury will re-open soon on a trial basis so we can assess its effectiveness and usage. It will reopen in September and more details on the specific date, its opening hours and how people can access it will be confirmed soon.
The health suite will permanently close at Marlborough Leisure Centre because we are making improvements at the site, with the space needed to incorporate into the wet change provision and create a much bigger changing area, which will particularly benefit school swimming lessons. A Changing Places facility will also be installed, which will particularly benefit anyone with who is limited in their mobility and who have complex needs, as it helps them to get out and about and enjoy day-to-day activities. More information about the work at Marlborough can be found on the Marlborough Leisure Centre website.
The health suite facilities at The Olympiad in Chippenham will permanently close. The facilities at the site have not been in use since the pandemic and due to low usage prior to this, and that it would cost around £11k to get the suite in working order, it is not a viable option to bring it back into use. We will look at its options on how to make the best use of this space to better complement the improvements works currently taking place at the centre. More information on the improvements can be found at Olympiad Leisure Centre in line for a gym refurbishment as Council leisure investment continues .
The health suite facilities at Bradford-on-Avon, Devizes, Durrington and Springfield Community Campus (Corsham) will remain closed for the time being, with a decision made on their future in due course, which will be fully informed by the usage and any lessons learned from the reopening of the Five Rivers facilities.
We'll keep you updated as this work continues, but if you need more information in the meantime, please don't hesitate to contact leisureadmin@wiltshire.gov.uk (opens new window).
