Children with additional needs
We have a range of resources for children (and teens):
Handmade by the charity Bag Books (opens new window), these are simple stories with accompanying objects presented in a large box. All the objects relate to the story, and children can interact with them using their senses. These story boxes can be reserved for free via our Library catalogue (opens new window), see 'suggested reads' (under Children, Equality and Diversity) or the 'Multi-sensory stories list' in 'downloads'.
We aim to make our libraries as friendly and accessible as possible and to support customers who may need extra help when they are visiting. We have children's books about autism as well as children's titles featuring characters with autism, see suggested reads for children (opens new window) (under Equality and Diversity). Autism books for parents can be found in suggested reads for adults.
All our libraries have children's audiobooks on CD, specific titles can be reserved and borrowed for free
Packs for children with additional needs (www.booktrust.org.uk) (opens new window) - these are for children aged 0-5 years old who are deaf, blind, or partially sighted, or for children with conditions affecting fine motor skills. These are free packs containing two children's books plus guidance for parents and carers about books with their children. We have a small collection of dual language picture books in English and other languages.
We have a very small collection of books for older children and in non-English languages, including Ukrainian.
