Heritage and conservation

Wiltshire has a rich and diverse heritage. Whether you are researching your ancestors, the history of your town or parish, involved in school or college projects or require professional assistance on other heritage matters you will find a wealth of advice. Unfortunately metal detection is not allowed on council owned land.

The Heritage and Arts Service is based in the award winning Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre .

Heritage and Arts comprise the following:

  • Archaeology Service records and protects Wiltshire's archaeology and gives monument management advice
  • The Wiltshire and Swindon Archives and Wiltshire Local Studies service is also located within the Wiltshire and Swindon History Centre  and provides access to over 8 miles of historic archives, printed material and photographs.
  • Conservation and Museums Advisory Service (CMAS) aims to promote excellence in the care and use of collections by providing conservation training, advice and practical treatments to heritage organisations and the public, and also supports museums in Wiltshire to meet professional standards and become sustainable, resilient organisations.

Arts Service supports literature, media, performing and visual arts and crafts in Wiltshire

In addition, Wiltshire Council Heritage Services works closely with the Wiltshire Buildings Record which is a voluntary society and educational charity.

The Wiltshire Registration Service Copy Certificate Team is also based at the History Centre.
