Wiltshire Council encourages people to apply early for street party permissions ahead of VE Day.

Wiltshire Council is encouraging communities to come together to celebrate and thank our veterans as this year marks 80 years since Victory in Europe (VE) Day, when the Second World War ended in Europe on 8 May 1945.  

For those planning to mark the occasion on 8 May with friends, family, and the wider community, the council has gathered important guidance to help ensure celebrations run smoothly and comply with any necessary permissions. 

If events require council involvement or permissions, such as road closures, residents must submit an application at least eight weeks in advance. This means applications should ideally be received no later than 13 March 2025. 

There are many locations where residents can celebrate that do not require road closures applications; however, some local parks and green spaces will require permission from the landowner.

These locations include: 

• A local park/field 
• A village hall/green 
• Your garden 
• Local sports field 

If residents are hosting an event on Wiltshire Council-owned land, straightforward applications for permissions can be processed within two weeks. 

For those looking to close a road for a street party, Wiltshire Council urges residents to consider whether it is safe, sensible, and practical. If a road closure is required, people can request an application form at https://www.wiltshire.gov.uk/highways-special-event-road-closures.

It's important to consult with the community before applying, as a road closure will impact residents. Consider inviting them to get involved in the event planning. A record of those contacted should be included within the application. 

If the event involves entertainment, selling alcohol, or other licensed activities, additional permits may be needed. Please check requirements and submit any necessary applications as soon as possible.
