Bradford on Avon Library to close for extended period for work to improve energy efficiency

Bradford on Avon Library will close from Monday 18 December until Wednesday 27 December for an air source heat pump to be installed

Published 15 December 2023

Bradford on Avon Library will close from Monday 18 December until Wednesday 27 December for an air source heat pump to be installed.

Air source heat pumps replace boilers and water heaters and generate significantly less carbon emissions.

The installation is part of the council's work to become carbon neutral as an organisation by 2030. To date, through work to reduce carbon emissions and improve the energy efficiency of its buildings, the council is saving an estimated 2,250 tonnes of carbon emissions and £780,000 every year.

Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Libraries and Operational Assets, said: "It's great to see another one of our libraries kitted out with the latest climate-friendly technology.

"Air source heat pumps are an elegant solution that enable us to hugely reduce carbon emissions from our buildings. They are playing a big part in helping us to reach our goal of becoming carbon neutral as an organisation by 2030, and are widely used across the council's estate as well as various affordable housing projects.

"Installing new carbon-reducing technologies supports our business plan priorities of leading the way in how councils and counties mitigate the climate challenges ahead, and to ensure that the people of Wiltshire are empowered to live full, healthy, and enriched lives.

"We've scheduled these works at Bradford on Avon Library for the Christmas holidays as this is usually the least busy time for our libraries, with libraries already closed for some of this period. We thank people for their patience, and look forward to welcoming them back to the library after Christmas."

All libraries, including the mobiles libraries, will be closed on Monday 25 December, Tuesday 26 December, and Monday 1 January.

Between 27 December - 30 December, libraries will open as normal, with the exception that libraries that would normally be open in the evening will close at 5pm, or as usual if due to close earlier.

Normal library opening times will resume from Tuesday 2 January. More information on library opening times and mobile library routes is available on our website (opens new window).
