People from across Wiltshire who have had their lives transformed through the power of learning were invited to a special awards ceremony earlier this month.

The Family and Community Learning Awards Ceremony was an opportunity to congratulate those on their learning journey and the positive impact it has made in their lives.

Family and Community Learning is an adult community education programme which provides courses for adults in well-being, skills for independent living, helping their child, and work skills. The council also provides programmes in English for speakers of other languages who are resettling in the county.

There were seven categories of awards: new directions, learning for health and well-being award, English language award, overcoming challenges award, independent living award, into work award, and outstanding individual learner award. A special commendation award was also given out to recognise a learner who has approached challenges and show determination to improve employability options through learning .

The winner of the New Directions award was very happy to receive their accolade. Natalia Parzhanova said: I feel privileged to be part of the project and the courses I've attended.  For those of you who are on a journey of thinking what to do next, I'd highly recommend you start some of the courses ... the support you can get is just amazing!

Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council said: Congratulations to all our learners and those who attended this awards ceremony. There are many inspirational stories of how people have taken on the challenge of learning and it has totally transformed their lives. Having knowledge and skills can open new doors and opportunities but it can also help with health and well-being and confidence. The Family and Community Learning Team is doing a magnificent job and this special event demonstrates the value that learning can have for everyone.

The FACL team was recently awarded a Good rating by Ofsted after inspectors said learners "feel well supported by tutors who help them build their self-confidence and improve their well-being."

There are a host of courses available and details of upcoming learning opportunities are available here as well as details on who is eligible to attend at https://workwiltshire.co.uk/whats-on/ (opens new window)
