Bank Holiday visitors to Wiltshire beauty spot urged to plan ahead

Ahead of the August Bank Holiday weekend, Wiltshire Council along with Castle Combe Parish Council is asking people looking to visit Castle Combe to plan their trip responsibly.

Published 22 August 2024

Located within the Cotswolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Castle Combe is one of the county's top destinations, and is often named as one of the 'prettiest villages in England'. However, as a small community, it can be overwhelmed by visitors, especially on peak days such as bank holidays. People are reminded to use the designated parking spaces, to not park across the front of businesses or private residences and to refrain from parking on single or double yellow lines. Enforcement officers regularly patrol to monitor and deter illegal parking in the village.

Parking is available in the village at a pay-and-display car park in Dunns Lane in Upper Castle Combe. Alternatively, bus travel is available into the village from surrounding areas such as Chippenham.

Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council and Cabinet Member for Tourism, said: Castle Combe is one of the jewels in Wiltshire's crown, and whilst we want to encourage people to visit, we also know that it can be very popular and can be quickly overwhelmed with visitors, especially on a bank holiday weekend. Therefore, we want to ensure the things that make Castle Combe special are protected, while ensuring people can enjoy the area responsibly and the local economy and community can thrive.

If anyone is planning to visit this weekend, all we ask is that you are respectful of the local community, plan ahead and use the car parks provided in the area to ensure a successful visit. Visits could also be planned for other off-peak times, such as weekdays or non-bank holiday weekends.

However, if Castle Combe is busy, there are many other beautiful locations in Wiltshire to enjoy, such as nearby Lacock or Malmesbury. Residents or visitors looking to discover more of what the county has to offer can also make use of the council's Explore Wiltshire app. The app is location aware and contains trails, information and event listings to support people to explore the local heritage, landscapes and amenities in the local area.

The Explore Wiltshire app is free and available to download from the Apple app store (opens new window) or Google Play (opens new window).
