Cabinet to consider Gypsies and Travellers Development Plan

At its meeting on 4 February, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet will consider the Gypsies and Travellers Development Plan Document, which outlines how the housing needs of Gypsies, Travellers, and travelling showpeople in the county up to 2038 should be met.

Like all Local Planning Authorities, Wiltshire Council has a statutory duty to provide for the accommodation needs of Gypsies and Travellers, including the allocation of sites in their development plans. Cabinet will consider responses to the consultation, which ended in October 2024, and whether the proposed plan is ready to be submitted for examination.

Alongside the Wiltshire Local Plan review, which was approved by Full Council and has been submitted to the Secretary of State for independent examination, the Gypsies and Travellers Development Plan Document will complete the update of the adopted Wiltshire Core Strategy, which is now ten years old. Together they will ensure that the accommodation needs of all parts of Wiltshire's communities can be addressed and the council meets its equalities duties.

Cllr Nick Botterill, Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning, said: The Gypsies and Travellers Development Plan Document is a crucial element of the Wiltshire Council strategy to address the housing needs of Gypsies, Travellers, and Travelling Showpeople. It ensures the Council fulfils its statutory responsibilities and plans for sustainable growth, in line with national policy.

During the consultation, which was held in from 20 August to 4 October last year, we held five in-person engagement events and one online event to enable people to find out more and have their say.

If Cabinet agrees to approve the plan, it will be taken to Full Council for approval on 25 February.
