The improvement works taking place at the junction of Church Street and Union Street in Trowbridge will temporarily pause for the Christmas period from Friday 23 December 2022 and will restart again on Tuesday 3 January 2023.

Works are currently underway on Phase C which will see widening and paving of the footpath on the eastern side of Union Street between the Wiltshire Islamic Cultural Centre and the junction with Church Street.

From Tuesday 3 January 2023, works will continue on Phase C. Works will then move on to Phase D mid-January which focuses on Church Street, including the widening and paving of the footpath outside St James Church on Church Street.

Cllr Dr Mark McClelland, Cabinet Member for Transport, Waste, Street Scene and Flooding, said: "The type of work being carried out does mean that the traffic management arrangements have to remain in place throughout the Christmas period. We have taken every opportunity to minimise the impact these improvement works are having on people, and we hope residents will continue to support their town centre during this time.

"We are also mindful that the weather plays a part in how the works progress as low temperatures will influence what activities can take place. Additionally, the operatives working on this scheme are also part of our gritter driving crew, so when undertaking winter maintenance activities in the evenings, works on the site will start later in the day to allow for stand down time.

"There is no concern at present that this might extend the overall programme as we had accounted for the winter related issues in our plans."

Also from Tuesday 3 January 2023, the on-street parking in Church Street will be suspended to ensure the working area can be safely accommodated as well as keeping Church Street open to traffic. All businesses will be open as usual. All properties surrounding the scheme are being kept up to date on the works through letter drops.

One of the priorities in the council's Business Plan is to create vibrant and well-connected communities. This scheme forms part of the wider £16 million investment in Trowbridge town centre via the government's Future High Streets Fund and aims is to improve the ease and safety of pedestrian crossings as well as improve walking and cycling routes in key locations in the town centre.
