Wiltshire Council is inspiring residents to stay active by using an interactive app that encourages users to explore local parks and green spaces.

Street Tag encourages people to scan virtual tags at locations across Wiltshire to record the distance they have walked, cycled, run or used a wheelchair. People will collect points for visiting Street Tag locations and they can compete as an individual, team or with their school to win prizes.

Wiltshire Council has funded the app for a second season which will start on Monday 27 January. Last year, 1,063 people took part and covered more than 425,000 miles. The app encourages people to explore their local community such as their local library and green spaces to keep active and improve wellbeing. People can see their points add up on the app and be inspired to climb to the top of the leaderboard.

In addition to the pre-populated tags across Wiltshire, users are encouraged to create their own tags around their community using the 'create a tag' feature on the app. Although these self-populated tags will be worth less points, they enable communities to improve their Street Tag experience and generate more tags at places of interest around their community. It will also help the Street Tag team to consider and design new official tag additions to the app. Self-populated community tags will be reviewed by Street Tag to ensure they are placed in locations that are safe to access.

Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Public Heath, Communities, Leisure and Libraries, said: "We're really pleased that people have enjoyed using Street Tag since it launched last year in Wiltshire. The app supports communities across the county to get out and explore local green spaces and keep active.

"Although people can use the app throughout the year, with a new competitive season launching, now is the perfect time to give it a go. You can compete as an individual or team or with your classmates or colleagues and climb to the top of the leaderboard to win prizes.

"To understand more about your health and physical activity alongside the app, you can also borrow a free activity tracker watch or blood pressure monitor for six weeks from most Wiltshire libraries."

Competitions within the Street Tag app will take place at certain times throughout the year, but people can record their progress as soon as they download the app.

The app is free to download from app stores and is easy to use.

People can find out more about Street Tag by visiting Physical activity or watching the Street Tag introduction video on YouTube.
