The council won the Environmental Campaign of the Year Award at the 2024 awards, this is the second consecutive year that the council's efforts to reduce fly-tipping in Wiltshire have been recognised.

This year, Wiltshire Council has been shortlisted for the Enforcement Excellence Award along with Cambridge City Council and Wigan Council. The category recognises an individual or team who excels in enforcement, prioritising education and engagement.

During 2024, the Environmental Enforcement Team has embarked on an enforcement and educational drive aimed at delivering significant improvements in the local environment and reducing fly-tipping across Wiltshire.

Building on the success of the WTF campaign, the council launched the additional Stop at Source (SAS) campaign in July. Recognising the vital role that education plays in correct litter disposal, the SAS campaign aims to make people aware of their 'duty of care' when they're getting rid of their waste, particularly if they're handing it to someone who will take it away for them, such as people who advertise 'tip runs' on social media.

Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways and Street Scene, said: We are really proud to have been shortlisted again for the Keep Britain Tidy awards, showing once again what a great job our Environmental Enforcement teams are doing to tackle fly-tipping in the county. I'd like to congratulate and thank our officers for all their hard work, often going above and beyond to ensure success.

The We're Targeting Fly-tippers (WTF) and the Stop at Source (SAS) campaigns are hard-hitting and eye-catching and have been featured in both the local and national media. Most importantly though, they are getting results, with fly-tipping being completely eradicated at some of our previously known hotspots, thanks to the introduction of highly visible towers, equipped with live cameras and Automatic Number Plate Recognition (ANPR), as well as it's covert camera capability. That's a fantastic result!

We've seen a 31% increase in formal actions year on year. We are taking all the legal options available to us wherever we find fly-tipping, giving a clear warning that illegal waste disposal is not tolerated and offenders will face serious consequences.

Our message is clear - We're Targeting Fly-tippers here in Wiltshire.

The Keep Britain Tidy awards will take place at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Liverpool on 30 January 2025.
