Council to fence off Melksham's former golf course site as part of its central depot plans

Wiltshire Council is to fence off its former golf course site in Melksham as part of its plans for a strategic central depot in the town.

The council is still in the planning stages of what this depot may look like, and which services may be included on the site. While this planning work is ongoing, it has conducted ecological and environmental studies, both on the old golf course site at Bowerhill and in the immediate local area.

To secure the site, the council will secure the former golf course to prevent public access on Wednesday 17 July. To ensure the public can continue to enjoy the local area, the council has improved the nearby public rights of way by cutting back vegetation, improving access and installing more signage to help people understand where the rights of way are. It is also improving the path surface to ensure it is ready for use in winter.

Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: As we look to our future plans for a strategic central depot in Melksham, we have decided to secure the former golf course site.

We recognise that the site is used by some dog walkers, but this area isn't a formal public right of way, which is why we are improving the existing rights of way in the area and encouraging people to use these paths instead.

The new strategic central depot will ensure our services are fit for purpose over the next 30 years and make us a more efficient organisation by reducing our overall number of depot sites. It will also help us to meet our Business Plan priority to reduce carbon emissions, as part of our pledge to be carbon neutral by 2030.

In November 2023, the council's Cabinet approved a capital budget of £32.618m for delivery of a new central area strategic depot at Melksham.
