Cranes, military jet engines and the latest technology at STEM fair in Salisbury

Published 12 March 2020

Cranes, military engines and the latest technology were on display to inspire the scientists and technology innovators of the future at a STEM event in Salisbury today

Wiltshire Council organised the event which invited businesses and organisations at City Hall to inspire the next generation of STEM professionals.

The event forms part of Salisbury 2020, celebrating the 800th anniversary of Salisbury Cathedral.

A crane was stationed outside City Hall throughout the day offering young visitors a manoeuvring the bucket challenge. There was also a chance to glimpse the Pegasus engine which was fitted inside the Harrier. Inside City Hall hundreds of children explored further opportunities to find out the latest technology.

The event has taken place during British Science Week (opens new window) which runs from 6 15 March.

Cllr Pauline Church,Cabinet Member for Children, Education and Skills said: Today has been a great opportunity for our local school children to see a range of career possibilities on their doorstep.

We have local businesses and organisations here giving pupils a chance for a hands-on experience of the latest science and technologies to inspire them to consider STEM careers for the future.

Klee Matthews a teacher at St Joseph's School said the event had been really valuable.

There isn't always time to cover these in the curriculum so today's STEM Fair is an excellent opportunity for our pupils to be inspired.

Sally Carson of drone company Callen-Lenz said: There has been a skill shortage in this area and these events help to create real interest. Some of the children here today already have access to toy drones and games online but this makes it all real.
