The multi million pound refurbishment of Trowbridge's historic Town Hall, has moved to an exciting stage in the project with the appointment of an award-winning architectural and heritage consultancy practice to oversee the design of the renovations.
Appointed by Wiltshire Council, Purcell will lead a multi-disciplinary design team to bring to life the exciting plans for the Grade II listed building ensuring its future as a hub of activity at the heart of the town.
Similar community-centred projects lead by Purcell include Holyhead Market Hall, Norfolk County Hall and Manchester Town Hall. Other ongoing large-scale restoration and renewal projects include Palace of Westminster, National Gallery and National Portrait Gallery, among others.
Over £8.1 million has been allocated to refurbish and restore the Town Hall from the £16 million awarded to Wiltshire Council from the government's Future High Streets Fund. The investment will bring the complete building back into use so it can host a full and vibrant programme of community-led cultural and social activities for the people of Trowbridge, enabling it to fulfil its potential as a landmark asset for the town.
Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of the Council, said: We are delighted to be working with such a renowned and internationally recognised organisation such as Purcell. They have significant experience of renovating historic buildings to the highest standards and we look forward to working with them to secure the long-term future of this much loved cultural and community asset.
Clare Phillips, Associate Conservation Architect at Purcell added: We are thrilled to be working with Wiltshire Council on this landmark community project. Our team of long-standing collaborators includes QODA engineers to improve the buildings services, Mann Williams as the structural engineers and Hydrock Fire.
We are excited to release the potential of the building for a wide range of community activities and events. The refurbishment will enhance the character and heritage of the Town Hall whilst creating flexible spaces to ensure the long-term sustainability of an inclusive community building at the heart of the high street.
David Lockwood, Director at Trowbridge Town Hall, commented: Purcell are the perfect fit for this project. Not only do they possess a wealth of experience with historic buildings, but their creative approach to realising this game-changing opportunity gives us the best chance of successfully realising this project for the benefit of the people of Trowbridge.
Cllr Richard Clewer added: The refurbishment of the Town Hall will complement other regeneration projects in Trowbridge as part of the Future High Streets Funding to help breathe new life into the high street. More information about these projects and how local people can comment on them to ensure we can deliver the best outcomes for the people of Trowbridge will be provided shortly.
