Wiltshire Council confirms improvements to Devizes Leisure Centre
Improvements will be made to the fitness facilities at the centre.
Wiltshire Council has confirmed more details on its plans to improve the fitness facilities at Devizes Leisure Centre.
The work will get underway next month (May) and will include:
- Carrying out a full replacement of the fitness equipment and flooring in the main gym and current weights room, adding a consultation room and the necessary infrastructure, finishes and fixtures to create a modern fitness suite.
- Refurbish the upstairs studio to make it a fit-for-purpose group exercise space, adding the necessary infrastructure, finishes and fixtures to provide a suitable environment and customer experience.
Although every effort will be made to minimise the impact as much as possible for those that use the centre while these works take place, there will inevitably be some disruption (please see 'notes to editors). To compensate for any inconvenience caused during this period, all life zone and fitness zone DD memberships will be reduced by 25% in price for the duration of the works. Wiltshire Council will contact any members directly about the arrangements of this and any other changes in due course.
Construction work at Devizes is expected to get underway towards the end of May. Interim arrangements at the centre, as a result of the works, will be in place from 16 May 2024. Work is expected to be complete by autumn 2024.
Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: "I'm pleased to be able to share the plans we have for Devizes Leisure Centre, which demonstrates our commitment to improving the health and wellbeing of our communities.
"We apologise for any disruption caused by these works, but the outcome will be well worth any interim arrangements.
"The improvements we are making to some of our leisure facilities have been carried out following detailed planning, and we will have more news on other improvement projects in due course.
"In today's financial climate it's now more important than ever that we spend our money wisely and get the absolute best value we can, while still providing a better user experience and improving people's health".
Wiltshire Council recently confirmed plans to carry out improvement works to, Marlborough Leisure Centre, Warminster Sports Centre and Lime Kiln Leisure Centre. Progress is also being made on developing a new leisure centre for Trowbridge. There are also plans to make changes at more of the county's leisure centres, and more information will be shared on that in due course.
From 16 May 2024 the interim arrangements at the centre while the improvements works take place are:
- The gym will be relocated in the hall. Our aim is to provide all current equipment in this area however this may not be possible
- As the gym will be relocated to the sports hall, the hall will be reduced from four courts to three
- Fitness classes will be relocated due to the studio being refurbished and some may be cancelled. Relocated classes will take place in either a squash court or the sports hall. The council will share a programme of classes once this has been confirmed
- Those who regularly book to use the whole hall will be unable to during the works due to the relocation of the gym. We will directly contact those affected
- Casual squash and badminton bookings will be reduced due to the relocated classes and gym being in the Sports Hall
- The council will need to close the gym to allow for equipment to be moved to the temporary gym in the sports hall. We anticipate a closure of two days which will be Monday 20 May and Tuesday 21 May. Gym users will be asked to use our other sites during this time should they want to.
