It was an exciting day for Melksham today (1 August), as Melksham Community Campus opened to an excited public for the very first time - offering a variety of leisure, library and community services.
The doors opened at 10am, with residents and families in attendance and keen to see the brand-new campus for themselves and try out the facilities. The campus can be found in the centre of Melksham at the Market Place (SN12 6ES).
The campus was formally opened by local children Finley, Erin, Murdoch, Corin and Echer, who cut the ribbon at 10am.
On display were some vibrant aquatic-themed pictures, coloured in by local schoolchildren as part of a recent competition that saw two youngsters win a month's free swim at the campus. There was also another competition for people to enter on the opening day with a month's free membership on offer.
The campus was constructed by Pellikaan Construction Ltd and has been supported with a grant from Sport England. It offers a wide range of facilities and services under one roof, including a gym; cycle and fitness studios; a 25m pool and learner pool; sports hall; library and meeting space for the community. Melksham Without Parish Council has also relocated to the campus.
Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Leisure and Libraries, said: We couldn't be happier to welcome the community to the campus and it was heartening to see residents of all ages turn up on our big opening day to celebrate this occasion alongside us.
I'd like to sincerely thank everyone who has played a part in helping our long-held vision to become a reality, as this truly was a partnership effort. It's been a complex, challenging project, but seeing the completed building and knowing what a positive impact it will have on the local community makes all that hard work worthwhile.
As a council we've always tried to buck the trend and innovate, and this significant investment in a facility shaped around local needs in the heart of the town is a shining example of our ambitions, and what can be achieved when you work together with the local community.

Melksham Community Campus is a key milestone in the overall strategy for the town, which has seen significant investment by Wiltshire Council in recent years. This includes the opening of Oakfields football and rugby facility in 2017, the development of Melksham Market Place in 2017, the provision of a brand-new skate park in 2017, the development of a new cricket pavilion in 2017, and refurbishment of Melksham tennis courts in 2019. In addition, the campus itself will create 40 new jobs.
The council is working with Melksham Town Council on future plans for the old Melksham Library and Melksham Blue Pool sites to make best use of these assets for the town.
