Northgate Street in Devizes to reopen to traffic one-way

Following a fire that caused serious damage to properties in Northgate Street, Devizes, last month, Wiltshire Council is reopening the road to vehicles, one way.

Published 17 December 2024

The change, which will be in place during the afternoon of Wednesday 18 December, will mean that vehicles can travel along Northgate Street, from the junction with New Park Street to the junction with The Market Place, northbound only - from the Market Place to the A361.

Any vehicles that wish to travel southbound will have to use the diversion, which takes in New Park Street, Commercial Road, Gains Lane, A342, Southbroom Road, Long Street, St Johns Street and The Market Place.

Buses will not be returning to the Market Place until Thursday 19 December and from this date, some buses will be using different bus stops in the Market Place than they usually would. Passengers should look out for posters on the bus shelters that will explain which bus stop they should use to catch their bus.

Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways, said We're pleased to be able to reopen Northgate Street to one-way traffic following the awful fire that caused significant damage to some properties on the road.

Unfortunately, it is not safe to fully reopen the road yet, but we felt this was the best compromise to help minimise disruption and keep traffic flowing as much as we can.

Given the significant damage to properties and the potential danger to the public, we would expect the road to be closed to southbound vehicles for many months while the process of the owners working with their insurance companies progresses.
