Overnight road closures for Fisherton Gateway and Salisbury Station Forecourt Improvements

Published 26 July 2024

Fisherton Street

Fisherton Street will be closed to vehicular traffic overnight from 5 to 8 August as part of the Fisherton Gateway improvements which aims to make pedestrian travel into the city centre easier, safer and more convenient.

The overnight closures will be in place from 7pm to 6am to facilitate the installation of the build out on Summerlock Bridge/Water Lane. This is the latest feature of the on-going enhancement works which will provide the priority traffic system as set-out in the original design that will be introduced when the road is re-opened to two way traffic.

To support local takeaways and restaurants, takeaway delivery drivers will be able to park in the area behind City Hall and walk through to Fisherton Street to collect takeaways. Delivery drivers can access this area via Avon Approach and the A36. During the closure Central Car Park and The Maltings Car Park will remain open as free parking between 6pm and 8am for all users of Fisherton Street.

As seen during the recent closure of North Street at its junction with Fisherton Street, North Street will again become two way permitting vehicles to exit via South Street whilst egress via Fisherton Street is not permitted.

Fisherton Street will also be closed to vehicular traffic for further night works from 12 to 23 August for resurfacing works. It is proposed that similar arrangements for takeaway delivery drivers will be in place during this period. This is a significant stage as we near completion of this improvement scheme and the work has been scheduled to minimise disruption as much as possible.

Churchfields Road

Additionally, Churchfields Road will be closed overnight from 8 to 9 August as part of the station forecourt improvements, which aim to enhance the attractiveness and accessibility of the area for both residents and visitors.

This closure will be between 8pm and 5am to allow for the removal of the existing central traffic island opposite 15 and 16 Churchfields Road. This work forms part of the on-going enhancement scheme to the station forecourt which will include new pedestrian and cycle access to the station from Churchfields Road and a new crossing point at Churchfields Road.

HGV access will not be possible to the industrial estate whilst the works take place. Any business requiring 'critical' access to the industrial estate during hours of the closure can contact our contractor on SalisburyStationForecourt@milestoneinfra.co.uk. It may be possible to provide an escort through the works and this option will involve vehicles waiting on Churchfields Road before being escorted.

We apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused by the work and will be seeking to ensure that any disturbance is kept to a minimum.

Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene and Flooding, said: One of our Business Plan priorities is to have vibrant well-connected communities and we are well on our way to achieving this in Salisbury.

We would like to thank businesses and residents for their patience and continued co-operation in delivering these important schemes for Salisbury.

These projects form part of the £9 million investment from the government's Future High Streets Fund.
