Schools in Wiltshire are seeking people to become school governors

Wiltshire Council has teamed up with Inspiring Governance to help schools in Wiltshire to find people to become school governors.

Published 24 May 2022

School governing boards play an essential part in leading our schools. They set the strategic vision and direction, approve the budget and hold the senior leadership team to account.

Every school in Wiltshire has a board of governors and many have vacancies. There are several categories of governors including community governors, parent governors, foundation governors and local authority governors, and across Wiltshire many schools have vacancies they need to fill.

Cllr Laura Mayes, Cabinet Member for Education and Skills said: Volunteering as a governor is a challenging but hugely rewarding role. Anyone over the age of 18 years can become a governor and you don't need to have school age children to become one.

People can draw on their own unique set of experiences to help the governing board, using their professional skills, expertise, and lived experiences to challenge and support a school.

It's also an excellent form of professional development, providing the opportunity to develop strategic leadership skills in a different professional setting.

In partnership with Inspiring Governance, Wiltshire Council is holding a webinar on Thursday, 16 June 2022 at 12.30pm giving people the opportunity to find out more about the governor role and the personal and leadership development benefits it can bring.

There will be an opportunity to hear from current governors about their own experiences of being a school governor, what they feel they have offered schools, and what they feel they've gained from their experiences. You can also learn directly about how to become a school governor through the Department of Education funded Inspiring Governance recruitment service.
