Successful completion of Fisherton Street Bridge waterproofing

The project involved removing the existing footpath slabs and road surface to expose the bridge deck. The deck was then prepared for a new spray-applied waterproofing system. The footpath slabs were re-laid, and the road was reinstated up to base level.

Final surfacing will be completed at the same time as the resurfacing of Fisherton Street and its side roads. This will take place during overnight road closures scheduled from 12 and 23 August. Cllr Nick Holder, Wiltshire Council's Cabinet Member for Highways, Street Scene, and Flooding, commented:

Routine inspections revealed water seeping through the bridge deck which, if left unaddressed, could compromise the long-term maintenance of the structure. By undertaking these preventative measures now, we aim to avoid more costly and time-consuming repairs in the future. This aligns with our Business Plan's goal of ensuring we have well-connected communities.

Although this work is separate from the £9 million investment in the city centre funded by the government's Future High Streets Fund, it was prudent to carry out the bridge waterproofing alongside the ongoing enhancements at Fisherton Gateway. This approach took advantage of existing traffic management arrangements at the western end of the Fisherton Gateway scheme, minimising further disruption to local residents and businesses.
