A Trowbridge swimmer has been selected to represent Britain at the World Downs Syndrome Swimming Championships being held later this year.
Dorian Williams, who swims at Trowbridge Sports Centre with Trowbridge Amateur Swimming Club (TASC), has been swimming since an early age and has found friendship, health and achievement through the sport. Recognising the huge contribution that his coaches have made to his progress, the family have also been well supported by one-to-one coaching through the adult swimming lesson programme at the sports centre. This has helped with his technique development and now Dorian has achieved the qualifying times required to be invited to the World Championships, in Antalya, Turkey next month.
Downs Syndrome GB formed to promote and encourage swimming for persons with Downs Syndrome and offer them opportunities to compete internationally. With no national funding available for Downs Syndrome, all expenses have to be met by the swimmers and their families. Travelling to camps and attending meets, entry fees, hotel accommodation and kit means high costs and Dorian is looking for sponsorship and support to help him make it to Turkey.
Cllr Ian Blair-Pilling, Cabinet Member for Leisure, said: "We understand how important regular physical activity is to wellbeing, attainment and self-esteem. It is wonderful to be able to follow Dorian's journey and help support his quest to reach the pinnacle. I'm delighted that one of Wiltshire Council's facilities has been able to foster his talent, and his story highlights the incredible work that our local sports clubs, coaches and volunteers do to promote opportunities for local people to start, stay and succeed in sport.
'Swimming is a fantastic activity for people of all fitness levels and abilities. Learn to swim activities are available at leisure centres across the county, from toddler age right through childhood to adults. We wish Dorian the very best of luck with both his fundraising and performance."
Katrina Hodge, Dorian's mum, said: "Everyone around us has been immeasurably supportive and for that we can only say thank you, thank you, thank you. Today Trowbridge, tomorrow the world...thanks to everyone on team Dorian"
If people would like to follow or support Dorian, they can do so on his GoFundMe: Fundraiser for Dorian Williams (opens new window) page.
