Wiltshire Council agrees equality and inclusion objectives

Council leaders have agreed a set of objectives to ensure equality and inclusion is at the heart of council business.

At full council this week Wiltshire Council's new equality and inclusion objectives were adopted by full council and included the following priorities:

  • Knowing our communities improving understanding of the diversity of the county and supporting better engagement
  • Training and awareness for staff and members
  • Continue to strengthen and build upon our staff networks and engagement forums.
  • Accessibility of services being equitable for all, including through the digital programme

The objectives are part of the Diversity and Inclusion Action Plan which will build on previous achievements outlined in the Corporate Equality Plan Annual Report. Past achievements include:

  • Creating the care leaver promise
  • 'Kick it Out' aiming to end racism in football
  • Celebrating LGBT History Month and Black History Month
  • Resettling Syrian refugees under the Vulnerable Persons Relocation Scheme. The council is close to meeting the original pledge of 150 people
  • Ensuring Equality Impact Assessments are carried out for budget and saving proposals

Cllr Richard Clewer, Wiltshire Council Deputy Leader said: "It is good to look back and see what's already been achieved. Our annual report shows we have made good progress in working to eliminate discrimination, furthering equality of opportunity and fostering good relations.

"However, we are never complacent and know we can always do more. This action plan for the future builds on our achievements and ensures we continue to head in the right direction and put equality and fairness to all at the heart of everything we do."
