Wiltshire Council will be carrying out work later this month to improve road safety, particularly at school pick up and drop off time, and to deter through traffic on Berryfield Road in Bradford on Avon.
The Bradford on Avon Local Highway and Footway Improvement Group (LHFIG) and Bradford on Avon Town Council have been awarded funding to improve the area, and the changes will make Berryfield Road, particularly the area around Christchurch Primary School, safer for pedestrians and residents by deterring through traffic and reallocating road space.
A temporary road closure will be in place from Monday 29 July to Friday 23 August to enable the council to complete the work safely.
Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: These plans were developed following concerns from local residents about increased through traffic in the area and pedestrian safety, particularly at school times.
The works will be carried out during the school summer holiday to minimise disruption. We apologise for any inconvenience caused during this time, but we look forward to the completed initiative providing a safer route for local residents and school children which will deter through traffic on this route and encourage greater uptake of walking and wheeling to and from school.
This initiative highlights our Business Plan commitment to improving road safety, and this improvement will make this route safer for all road users.
To highlight the residential nature of the area and deter through traffic, Berryfield Road will be narrowed at its junction with Bath Road with a new gateway surface treatment and improved crossing facility for pedestrians. The junction of Berryfield Road and Sladesbrook will also see a gateway treatment installed to mirror this approach.
In addition to this, there will be extra pedestrian space created outside of Christchurch Primary School to deter parked cars from blocking the entrance. The carriageway layout to the front of the entrance will be altered to remove the lay-by arrangement with the space reallocated for pedestrian use. Alongside this, 'School Keep Clear markings' will be provided to prevent parking during key times of the day. Timed waiting restrictions along Berryfield Road are to be extended to mitigate issues experienced by residents with access to private driveways and a new 'No Waiting at Any Time' (double yellow line) will also be added along the bend of the road leading to Manor Gardens to resolve issues faced by the local bus service and refuse collection vehicles.
