Wiltshire Council is upgrading a pedestrian crossing to Puffin technology on the A3102 Calne Road, Lyneham, in October, to make it safer for pedestrians to cross this busy road.

From 14 October, temporary two-way traffic signals and a temporary signal-controlled pedestrian crossing will be in place for approximately three weeks, to ensure the work to install the new crossing can be carried out safely.

The project is part of the A3102 Safer Road Scheme, a £7m investment into a range of measures to improve safety on this busy road, which stretches from Junction 16 of the M4 near Swindon to the A350 in Melksham, via Royal Wootton Bassett and Calne.

The whole project includes a range of safety measures, such as improving signage and road markings, redesigning some junctions, and installing safe crossing points, such as this one in Lyneham.

Cllr Richard Clewer, Leader of Wiltshire Council, said: Upgrading and replacing crossings is important to keep all road users - and particularly pedestrians - safe.

This crossing has come to the end of its designed life, so we're taking this opportunity to upgrade it to a Puffin crossing, as part of the A3102 Safer Road Scheme, which will see nearly £7m spent on improving safety for all road users on this busy road.

A key priority set out in our Business Plan is to have well-connected and safe communities and these upgrades will ensure residents can cross safely in Lyneham.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this work, but this crossing needs to be upgraded.

The scheme will also include works to improve the footways adjacent to the Co-op supermarket. The footways will be extended across the vehicle access and the tactile paving will be removed to give pedestrians priority. The footways near to the crossing will also be resurfaced.

There will be no loss of car parking spaces as a result of these highway improvements.
