Wiltshire Council to upgrade pedestrian crossings on A3102 in Melksham

Wiltshire Council will be starting work to improve two pedestrian crossings on the A3102 in Melksham from August.

The pedestrian crossing along the A3102 Lowbourne near its junction with Ruskin Avenue will be refurbished and upgraded to a Puffin (Pedestrian User Friendly Intelligent) crossing, with work beginning on Monday 12 August.

Similarly, the crossing further south of the junction adjacent to the library building will also be refurbished and upgraded, with work starting from Monday 2 September.

Both schemes will take approximately three weeks to complete and temporary traffic lights will be in place to ensure the work can be carried out safely.

The refurbishment scheme near Ruskin Avenue will include widening of the adjacent footway to improve pedestrian facilities surrounding the crossing and changes to the kerb line at the junction with Ruskin Avenue. The refurbishment scheme adjacent to the library building will include improvements to the footway at the crossing.

Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways said: We have a comprehensive traffic signal refurbishment programme in place and both these areas were identified as reaching the end of their design life, which is why we have made it a priority to upgrade them.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused by these works, but we look forward to the completed scheme providing increased safety for all road users.

It's essential that we upgrade and refurbish pedestrian crossings to ensure that residents can continue to live in well-connected and safe communities, which is a key priority set out in our Business Plan.

To minimise disruption while these works are carried out, we will be working on each crossing in turn.
