Wiltshire Council Unveils '12 Days of Christmas' health tips for the festive season
Christmas can be the most wonderful time of the year - so take the right steps to stay safe and healthy this festive season
Christmas can be the most wonderful time of the year - so take the right steps to stay safe and healthy this festive season.
That's the message from Wiltshire Council's Public Health team which is sharing 12 Christmas health messages every other day in December.
The festive season is a time for celebration but it's also important people stay mindful of their health and wellbeing, particularly at a time of year when health services are busy.
Winter brings an increase in illnesses such as flu and norovirus. Simple actions like getting vaccinated, washing hands frequently, and people staying mindful of their overall health can make all the difference in ensuring their Christmas remains jolly. People are also encouraged to ensure they have stocked up on all their medicines so they don't run out over the holidays.
The festive season is an important time to take proactive steps for sexual health. Using a condom is essential to protect against unintended pregnancies and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs). Ensuring people have enough contraception to cover the Christmas holiday is also important.
Regular testing for STIs is key to good sexual health. People are reminded to get tested if they think they've been exposed to an STI or they've had sex with someone new. People are encouraged to have regular testing in long term relationships
Kate Blackburn, Director of Public Health at Wiltshire Council said: "Good health is the greatest gift we can give ourselves and others this season. From getting vaccinated to taking proactive steps for sexual health, these will go a long way in ensuring we can all enjoy the season of goodwill and have a Christmas to remember - for all the right reasons!"
