Work to begin in Royal Wootton Bassett as part of A3102 Safer Road Scheme

Wiltshire Council will be starting work soon in Royal Wootton Bassett as part of the £7m A3102 Safer Road Scheme.

The A3102, between Junction 16 of the M4 near Swindon to the A350 in Melksham, via Royal Wootton Bassett and Calne, was identified through the Road Safety Foundation analysis, and the council was awarded £6.98m to make a number of safety improvements.

The scheme includes a range of safety measures, from smaller scale improvements such as improving signage and road markings, to larger schemes that include installing pedestrian and cycling facilities and redesigning some junctions.

In Royal Wootton Bassett, work has recently begun on pedestrian and cycling infrastructure improvements, including the extension of a shared use path from Coped Hall Business Park to Aldi. Once full construction begins in earnest on this first stage, traffic lights will be installed on Coped Hall roundabout until March, with a lane closure on the A3102 on both sides of the roundabout to prevent vehicles travelling southbound. A diversion route will be in place.

Following this, in spring work will begin to improve side-road crossings along the A3102 at Marlowe Way and Longleaze, with road closures of both side roads in place for two weeks during these works.

In June, Coped Hall roundabout will be resurfaced. This is not taking place immediately as there may be further utilities works in the area and the council is looking to ensure co-ordination with these works.

Cllr Nick Holder, Cabinet Member for Highways, said: We apologise for any inconvenience caused by this work, particularly as we know that there has been significant work by utilities companies on Coped Hall roundabout recently. However, this is an important scheme to improve road safety and we want to complete the work as quickly as possible.

In total, there are more than 35 different improvements taking place on the length of A3102 as part of the Safer Roads Scheme. These interventions will help to reduce accidents on the road and make it safer for all road users, including pedestrians.

In our Business Plan we have committed to having well-connected communities and improving road safety, and this work on the A3102 will help us to meet these commitments.

Later in the year, more changes will be made, including the addition of right-turn hatching into the BP garage near Longleaze, and resurfacing and lining at the junction of Whitehill Lane and New Road. In 2026, there will be significant work at Stoneover Lane to improve the junction and make it safer.
