Project Gigabit
Project Gigabit overview
Project Gigabit is a £5 billion government infrastructure project that brings together everything the government is doing to provide fast and reliable digital connectivity for the country.
It includes schemes such as the Gigabit Broadband Voucher scheme (GBVS) as well as phased contracts to those hard-to-reach parts of the UK that will need government support towards the cost of gigabit-capable broadband.
Regional procurements are managed by Building Digital UK (BDUK), part of the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology (DSIT), and are coming forward in phases, in support of the gigabit rollout. Commercial broadband network suppliers will compete to win the contracts to help deliver Project Gigabit. Of the relevant contracts, Lot 30 covers Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, including Swindon.
Public review
Building Digital UK (BDUK) carried out a public review to help identify areas in Lot 30 Wiltshire and South Gloucestershire, including Swindon, that could be suitable for future public funding for gigabit-capable broadband.
BDUK sought information and supporting evidence from suppliers in relation to the presence of gigabit-capable broadband infrastructure within the project area. They wanted to hear from all relevant stakeholders - including the public, businesses, internet service providers and broadband infrastructure operators - particularly in relation to the proposed mapped eligible areas. The public review opened on 29 March and closed on 29 April 2022.
