Traffic surveys

Find out about traffic surveys and how to request one.

What are traffic surveys

Traffic surveys are used to monitor the volume, speed, and type of traffic on our roads. They provide us with data for transport related projects within the council and we also carry them out where a traffic or safety concern has been identified in the community - see reasons for requesting a traffic survey

How to request a traffic survey

If you are a resident who would like to request a traffic survey, you need to contact your local Town or Parish Council (opens new window) who will submit the request on your behalf. We do not accept requests directly from members of the public.

Instructions for Town and Parish Councils

Please read the Traffic survey request instructions (PDF, 909 KB)(opens new window) before submitting a request on behalf of a resident. This will guide you through the Traffic Survey process including:

  • Area Board/SEPM and Traffic Engineer information
  • site selection criteria for traffic surveys
  • survey results and examples
  • how to use What3Words

Reasons for requesting a traffic survey

The following are the sort of things you may want to request a traffic survey for:

  • speeding that causes a risk to other road users or pedestrians
  • high traffic volumes that are causing increased congestion, noise and pollution
  • road safety issues, where there is a perceived risk at certain locations (nearby schools or parks, for example), or an area where there have been a high rate of accidents
